FAQ

NAUSEA and VOMITING

  • Do not give anything by mouth for 3-4 hours after the last time patient vomited. Then only give small sips of clear liquids (7-up, Sprite, Ginger ale, pedialyte or watered down Gatorade)
  • PEDIALYTE IS ALWAYS PREFERRED FOR YOUNGER CHILDREN.
  • Remember smaller volumes a little more often stays down longer than larger volumes less often
  • Absolutely no dairy or dairy products! (NO milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, cottage cheese, Pediasure, carnation instant breakfast or other instant breakfast drinks, hot chocolate or flavored coffee) for a minimum of 72 hours.
  • No fruit or fruit juices (no orange juice, sunny delight, apple juice, grape juice, or any other fruit juice) for a minimum of 72 hours
  • If tolerating clear liquids may slowly advance to a BRAT diet. If nausea and vomiting continues for longer than 24 hours call the doctor.

DIARRHEA

  • Diarrhea can be caused by many different things: disease (viral, bacterial, and parasitic), medication and diet. We will review the symptomatic treatment for viral diarrhea.
  • We start off the same as with nausea and vomiting.
No dairy or dairy products (no milk, yogurt, pudding, ice cream, cheese, cottage cheese, macaroni & cheese, Pediasure, carnation instant breakfast, or other instant breakfast drink, no hot chocolate or flavored coffee)
  • No fruit or fruit juices (see above list) (except bananas and applesauce)
  • No greasy foods (no chicken nuggets, french fries, hot dogs, pizza, lunch meat)
  • Place on BRAT diet (SEE BELOW) until stools are normal.
  • If diarrhea lasts longer than 72 hours call the doctor.

BRAT DIET

  • Bananas (raw real bananas, baby food) No Banana Pudding
  • Rice (rice cereal, minute rice (no butter), infant cereal not mixed with cereal)
  • Applesauce (No other apple product. It has to do with how it is processed.)
  • Toast (dry plain cheerios (if patient is old enough), crackers (saltines not club or Ritz or gold fish), toast (no butter) or plain bread
  • HINT: (you can mix the applesauce in with the rice. Kids seem to like this combination)

FEVER

  • Fever is a friend. It is your body’s way of fighting viruses and bacteria.
Do not medicate unless temperature is greater than 101 on the thermometer (not by touching the forehead with your hand) or child is extremely uncomfortable.

  • If fever greater than 104 and not coming down with Tylenol call the Doctor
